At 8.30 am on Saturday 25th July a serious fire broke out in the Walsingham Chapel at the base of the tower. The contents of the chapel and the first floor of the tower have been lost and the nave has suffered smoke and heat damage. Structurally the tower is sound, but two floors will have to be rebuilt.

Many members of the congregation and passing visitors have helped to bring the nave and chancel back into order and services are now being held in the church. However, until the tower has been boarded up, the church will remain locked when not in use.
